Encouraging One Person at a Time
Working on the Backside of Destiny
By Savaslas Lofton
1Sa 16:10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
1Sa 16:11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all [thy] children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
Samuel was sent to anoint a King out of the house of Jesse, for the reign of Israel was stripped from Saul because of his disobedience. Samuel and Jesse probably thought for sure that the next to reign would be one of Jesse’s sons who were strong and valiant, but not so. When the gathering of the sons was called; David, who labored and took care of the sheep (a task always passed to the youngest son); was not even mentioned. Perhaps it was because of what his father and his brothers perceived of him. They probably thought that he would be the least bit qualified because he was small, and hadn’t not the outward countenance of a warrior. Isn’t this the way people think today? Their lack of insight of who you are will always shorten their perception of what you would become.
God knew that visual perception may be one of Samuel’s challenges, hence why God would say unto Samuel:
1Sa 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for [the LORD seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
David didn’t even know that he was considered by God to be King. Can’t you see it now? Those young men, strong, were ensuring that their best qualities were displayed as they passed by Samuel. All the while David was probably tending to the flock with dung between his toes, weathering the scorching heat singing a sweet lullaby. He hadn’t time to prepare, comb his hair, and wash his clothes. God called Him just as he was. And it was in the midst of what David was doing (tending to the sheep) that would be the premise of his service toward God and His people.
Are you working on the backside of your destiny? I am certain that you probably feel the same way. Your daily task probably cause you to dig into the trenches and get dung between your toes as well, residue of your faithfulness and dedication to what you are called to do now. That’s why I have some great news! Your time is coming, when you will be called from the field to be anointed or empowered to do what God has always wanted you to do. Continue to remain faithful.
1Sa 16:12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he [was] ruddy, [and] withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this [is] he.
1Sa 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
The Spirit of the LORD is what empowers you to do what you have always been practicing for on the side of the mountain. You are developing the muscles and skills necessary to slay Goliath and rule as He has promised. Be patient, continue to be faithful:
2Ti 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
Your time is coming. Be ready to answer the call!
God bless you,
